Cole and Immy had book day at school recently, and the students were encouraged to dress up as their favourite literary characters, with the theme of *champions*. Cole and Immy took the job of deciding their characters all very seriously, and finally settled on Dorothy (from the Wizard or Oz) and Robin Hood (from erm, Robin Hood!)
My little English-Lit-degree-holding-heart may have skipped a beat or 2 at their choices. And not just because the kids know both characters from their book origins! (Although Immy was concerned that not everyone would realise why she was wearing silver shoes..."because not everyone reads books mum, some people only watch the movie, even though the movie's always different and the book always has more adventures!" So. very. proud.)
There was costume making involved. Of course! But with a twist...we all picked out the fabric together as usual, but this time both kids had an active hand in sewing their costumes, and in fact by the end of each costume, I wasn't even sitting at the sewing machine anymore, having been done out of all the foot-pedal-operating, fabric-guiding, button-manipulating jobs but my eager young sewists! The seams are resultingly wavy, but oh my, the pride and delight on the faces and in the heardts of these 2 was well worth me being forced away from the action! It was pretty cool.
...of course, now I'm on the hunt for a wee machine that will put up with the rigours of 2 enthusiastic beginners, because I'm not quite ready to share mine!
This is where Cole starts asking if I'm done yet, and Immy and I
simultaneously realise she doesn't have her glasses on.
