We had a crazy hailstorm here recently. The hailstones pelted down – they were smashing into everything, and within 5 minutes our little patch of lawn was white and icy. Since we have been having lots of discussion lately about what makes weather, this really was ideal timing on Mother Nature's part! The kids loved watching ice come shooting out of the sky on a hot, humid day.
They loved donning their bright yellow school raincoats and racing out in the rain (after the hail had stopped) to pick out the biggest hailstones, and they loved seeing how much they could collect in handfuls before their fingers froze.
They loved seeing if the stones tasted like regular ice, and how quickly they melted, but most of all, they loved getting barefoot and bouncing on a trampoline covered with massive, frozen raindrops!
(and after their toes were numb, they rather loved their mother making them come inside to a large warm bubble bath to thaw out!)
Your are such a cool mom to let them do that!! :) I wish we had hail in the forecast now! :)

awww thanks! I confess that sometimes I need to consciously employ a *do I have a good reason why this isnt a good idea?* attitude...it can be easy to get into that *saying no for convenience/as a default* loop - especially with things like letting your children out barefoot with ice, for goodness sake! (the fact it was an otherwise very hot day here in the middle of summer swayed me somewhat!) And sometimes I just remind myself that things like this are a good opportunity for gratitude for things like warm baths at our disposal...I dont know how many times the kids have quoted back at me *mama, its okay, thats what washing machines are for!* after some particularly muddy adventure!
