As a general rule I don't comment here on world events, politics, religion, and the like. It's not that I don't pay attention (I do), or have opinions on the issues (I certainly do!), it's just that this is my happy place, and sometimes it's nice to have a wee happy bubble, completely unencumbered by the harshness of reality...
Christchurch's latest earthquake is an exception. Yesterday's quake occurred just before 1pm and was devastating in its delivery and impact. So far 75 people have been confirmed dead, and just over 300 are still on the missing list - most of those presumed trapped in fallen buildings and debris. 80% of Christchurch remains without water, and about 50% without power.
And all this just a scant 5 months after the first devastating quake, which wreaked havoc yet amazingly was not fatal (it struck at 4am when most were safely at home in bed) though there was significant structural damage throughout the city. Poor Christchurch was just starting to get it sea legs back...
It's a bit hard to know quite what to do to help from here (we are in the upper middle of the North Island, so far from the central South Island where Christchurch is located) but the thinking cap is on.
