We spent our Saturday in Auckland at the Zoo. It was an utterly glorious day, sunshiney and bright and warm - just perfect. And we all had a great time. I often feel quite ambivalent toward zoos - the idea of animals being in captivity saddens me, but I'm happy to say that unlike other zoos I've visited (Bangkok springs to mind) absolutely everything is done for the welfare of the animals here, and the keepers are so clearly dedicated and in love with their jobs and their charges, that it's hard not to leave thinking they're well cared for and given every opportunity. And the chance for people to see these magnificent creatures in the flesh, well surely that is more effective a means of kickstarting environmental awareness that a picture would be.
Anywaaaayyy...enough rambling, I figure you've all seen animals before, so here are some of the other things we did at the zoo:
...took direction from our wee Type-A...
...counted stripes...
...cooed over the new baby (*Mama, how can he be a new baby when he is bigger than me?*)...
...inspected rocks and trees for climbability...
...ensured all water equipment was operating appropriately...
...made full use of all available spy holes...
...glimpsed the exotic bumblebee (this was a tie with the hippos and the ring-tailed lemur for Cole's favourite animal...apparently seeing them every day in the Hebes has done nothing to dampen their mystique!)
...chuckled at the cute tiger posters... (my favourite: his mother's eyes, his father's nose, his neighbour's leg! mwahahaha)
...sorted out puzzle pieces...
...had a drink with a new buddy...
...practised our rappelling...
...wrangled ornery geckos...
...and shoved reading material down our pants...
...which, now that I come to think of it, wasn't all that different to every other day around here, though the gecko wrestling has definitely fied down since our return to civilisation!!!
